Manuscript critique
This service guides you as you venture further on your writing adventure. It takes the form of an editorial report, and covers all the important elements that make up your story.
What’s included?
A comprehensive editorial report, usually 10–20 pages, which will allow you to make effective revisions to your manuscript. The focus will be on elements such as plot, pacing, character development, setting, themes and dialogue.
Who’s it for?
This service will suit you if you’re looking for ways to strengthen your novel by implementing suggestions yourself. My report will give you fresh insight about what you’re doing effectively, and which story elements might need some more work. I’ll also give you ideas about how to address these. After all, there’s a huge difference between knowing there’s an issue and knowing how to fix it!
Perhaps you’re looking for more guidance, such as comments within your manuscript with specific examples of how you could change things. In that case, a full developmental edit could be more suitable. (The editorial report is included with that as well!) Or, take a trip to the editing forge for a bespoke package.
What does it cost?
My fee for a manuscript critique is £0.0075 per word. I also accept other currencies, and will use the exchange rate at the time you book your slot. (A 20% non-refundable deposit is required upon booking.)
More about the process
- I’ll send you a questionnaire so I can learn more about you and your manuscript. This is so I can understand which elements of your writing are most important to you, which helps me to give you the feedback you require.
- Next, I’ll read your manuscript and make detailed notes.
- Finally, I’ll create your editorial report (usually 10–20 pages). This will contain an in-depth analysis of your story. I’ll discuss things like plot, pacing, character development, dialogue, theme(s) and setting. I’ll touch on grammar and spelling, but they won’t be the main focus (addressing those issues in depth would be classed as copyediting).
- My feedback won’t only be critical! I want you to come away excited to create the next draft, so I’ll be pointing out what you’re already getting right too.
